Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York charge that Carone used his position in 2022 to override Department of Social Services rejections and steer the contract to the Microtel Inn in Long Island City, with monthly payments of $10,000 funneled through his brother Anthony and disguised as legal fees. The indictment also names hotel owner Yan Po Zhu and his business manager Crystal Chen. Carone was arrested on June 24, 2026.
