Vatican and Baptist voices press AI developers on moral limits, adding political pressure
A October 11, 2026 report says religious voices have become a political liability for companies building AI. Faith leaders from Catholic and Southern Baptist traditions are pressing the industry on moral limits. Pope Leo XIV is the central figure. His May 2026 encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, argues that AI must not be confused with human intelligence, that technology should serve the common good, and that control of AI must not stay in the hands of a few. On the Protestant side, the Southern Baptist Convention's 2023 resolution holds that human worth comes from being made in God's image, not from what people contribute to society. Anthropic is also engaged. Co-founder Chris Olah has said he spoke with 15 religious leaders about AI, and a New York Times report described the company consulting religious scholars on instilling moral values in its Claude model.
