Schwab CEO Rick Wurster Rejects Fully Autonomous AI Trading, Blocks Outside Agents From Moving Client Money
Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster said on the firm's October 15–16, 2026 third-quarter earnings call and in a Bloomberg TV interview that an AI agent should trade for a client only under rules the client sets, with a person watching. Schwab is blocking unauthorized outside agents from logging into client accounts, and the firm says such attempts run in the tens per week. Wurster said Schwab stops Meta's Muse agent from moving funds because the risks to clients and the firm are unacceptable. He also called building Schwab's own AI trading strategies for clients a "fool's errand" and said he sees no reliable way for AI to beat the market. He said client trading through large language models and APIs has doubled in about six months, and he framed the central question as liability: who is responsible when an autonomous agent makes a costly error. He added that many firms promoting agentic trading earn revenue from trading fees, which gives them a reason to encourage it.
