Why it matters

Debevoise & Plimpton is preparing a new version of STAAR, its Suite of Tools for Assessing AI Risk, for 2027, according to Law360 Pulse. The firm presents the update as a way to help clients with their AI projects. STAAR is a paid service sold on monthly subscriptions. It gives clients continuously updated AI legal resources, including policies, training materials, governance lessons, regulatory trackers, and descriptions of generic AI use cases. The 2027 version follows STAAR 2.0, announced March 9, 2026. That release is built on Legora's AI Portal and is designed to help in-house legal and compliance teams evaluate, govern, and deploy AI. Blackstone, Capital One, Evercore, GSK, and New York Life are in the early-adopter beta, which runs through August 31, 2026.

Feature changes, pricing, and a launch date beyond the 2027 target have not been made public. Avi Gesser, co-chair of the firm's Data Strategy & Security Group and head of its AI practice, has said STAAR 2.0 draws on thousands of hours of the firm's AI legal work and lets clients query that experience using AI. Charu Chandrasekhar, a former SEC enforcement lawyer, is credited with leading development.

For attorneys, the key signal is that Debevoise is turning its AI advisory work into a recurring product and planning a successor only months after its last major release. Watch whether beta participants convert to paid subscriptions and whether the 2027 version reaches clients beyond the current group. Pricing will determine whether this is a tool for large in-house teams or a broader market offering. In-house counsel evaluating AI governance vendors should add STAAR to their list and ask how the firm's guidance is updated and how client data is handled. The firm's AI work is also drawing attention in the trade press, including a recent Bloomberg Law feature on its client-facing AI tools.
