Why it matters

On October 12, 2026, Bending Spoons product leader Federico Simionato announced on X that the company was cutting a large part of Airtable's staff. He said the cuts reflected a belief that smaller teams ship more and better, not the quality of the laid-off workers' work. The same post listed upcoming Airtable product work, including a new Core team and upgraded AI features, and thanked departing staff. Commenters called the post insensitive and self-promotional. Simionato replied that he was "not celebrating at all" and called it "a hard day for good people." In a separate announcement, Airtable's new product lead, Alessandro Savarese, said the company is parting ways with a large portion of its pre-acquisition team, who will leave by the end of the week with substantial separation packages. Bending Spoons, the Milan-based company that went public in July 2026, agreed in August to buy Airtable, the San Francisco spreadsheet and database firm, for roughly $1.28 to $1.3 billion. The deal closed in early September, about a month before the cuts.

Airtable has not disclosed how many jobs were cut. Local reporting puts its pre-acquisition headcount at about 800, but the final figure is unconfirmed. A Bending Spoons representative said the decision was not taken lightly and does not reflect on the team's work. Bending Spoons did not describe the cuts as AI-driven, though some commentary has tied them to a broader wave of tech layoffs framed that way. The company has a record of deep restructurings after acquisitions, including cutting 129 staff at Evernote months after buying it. California state records also show an earlier San Francisco layoff of 111 Airtable employees.

For attorneys, the immediate items to track are the separation terms, including release language and any restrictions on departing staff, and whether the layoffs trigger notice requirements under California's WARN Act and federal WARN. The official headcount will matter for both. Because Bending Spoons is newly public, watch for disclosures on restructuring charges or headcount in its filings, which could also reveal the scale of the cuts. The post itself is a useful case study in how layoff messaging paired with product promotion can draw scrutiny, which may shape how clients on either side of an acquisition handle workforce communications.
