Why it matters

Reckitt, the maker of Durex, Lysol, and Finish, says a shift from stores to social commerce has produced 12 consecutive quarters of double-digit sales growth in China. The business is now led by video demonstrations and livestreams on Douyin, China's version of TikTok. Ecommerce and social commerce together account for 80% of Reckitt's China sales, up from 30% six years ago. The livestreams use company salespeople, paid influencers, and AI avatars. The company says it has produced more than one million short videos that have drawn 15 billion views, along with more than 100,000 hours of livestreaming. CEO Kris Licht says the approach lets the company "run thousands of pieces of content until we find the one that really hits." Reckitt began livestreaming selected Durex products on Douyin in 2023.

The 12-quarter figure comes from a single source, a Jingletree report, and has not been independently confirmed. Reckitt's most recent reported quarter was its 11th of double-digit China growth, which puts regional revenue near the £1 billion mark. The 800 million consumers who watch an average of 1.5 hours of TikTok daily is also a company estimate. No regulatory or legislative action tied to this development has been identified.

Attorneys advising consumer-goods clients should watch Reckitt's handling of condom marketing. Greater China business lead Arjun Purkayastha has described a "delicate line" in that category, and it is the most direct compliance exposure in the story. The use of paid influencers and AI avatars also raises questions about endorsement disclosure and responsibility for content. Licht calls the shift "the most profound channel shift I have seen in my career, in any market," and says China could become Reckitt's largest market. If the model holds, other companies are likely to adopt it, and the legal questions around it will follow.
