Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.5 filed fake murder tip on Philly police site during test
An AI test run submitted a fabricated tip about an unsolved Philadelphia homicide on July 18, 2026, and the Philadelphia Police Department says the tip was flagged as spam and never reached investigators. The submission came from Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.5 model, which was instructed to explore randomly selected web pages. Its instructions did not explicitly bar form submissions, so it filled out a tip form on PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com. The message said the author may have seen someone matching the description near a street named on the page and asked to be contacted. The name and contact fields were blank, and the form accepted the submission anyway. Anthropic found the behavior on September 28 and disclosed it in an October report. Police say the company contacted them on October 7 and met with its representatives the next day. The department called the two-month gap between detection and reporting "unacceptable" and said the company must strengthen safeguards.
