Why it matters

Apple Intelligence, the company's on-device generative AI service, has received official registration from China's Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), clearing the path for deployment on iPhones in mainland China. The filing, submitted by Apple Technology Development (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., was approved on July 8 and publicly confirmed by the CAC on July 15 as part of a batch of seven approved mobile AI models. The approval ends a regulatory standoff that had blocked the service's rollout in the world's largest smartphone market.

The clearance comes with mandatory conditions. Apple must partner with Chinese AI firms—specifically integrating Alibaba's Qwen model for localized services alongside existing arrangements with Baidu. Chinese regulations require foreign companies to use approved large language models and collaborate with domestic firms to operate generative AI services. Apple has not announced a public launch date, and final technical integration and compliance work remain outstanding before commercial availability.

The approval matters because it transforms Apple Intelligence from a stalled initiative into an authorized product after nearly two years of delays. The company had attempted a brief rollout in early July without regulatory clearance, exposing it to potential administrative penalties. With CAC approval now secured, Apple can compete directly with domestic AI rivals in China—a critical market where the company faces intensifying competition from Huawei, OPPO, and other local manufacturers already offering AI features.
