Why it matters

Apple has hired Scott Tucker, a former deputy general counsel and head of litigation at Meta Platforms, for a newly created vice president role. Tucker will oversee worldwide commercial and patent disputes and legal work on Apple's financial products. Bloomberg first reported the hire on October 16, 2026, citing people familiar with the move. Under the new structure, Heather Grenier, Apple's VP for commercial and competition litigation, will report to Tucker instead of General Counsel Jennifer Newstead, while staying on Newstead's legal leadership team. Kyle Andeer's remit has also expanded to cover international legal matters, child safety, cybersecurity, and law enforcement. Before joining Meta, Tucker held a senior legal role at Morgan Stanley.

Apple has not publicly confirmed the hire, and Tucker's start date has not been disclosed. Public accounts of General Counsel Kate Adams' status also conflict. Newstead became general counsel in March, replacing Adams, who had held the post since 2017. Apple says Adams will retire late next year after a transition of duties, but the timing and scope of that handoff are not yet public. Apple has also said government affairs will merge into the general counsel role under Newstead after Adams leaves, following Lisa Jackson's retirement.

Apple's legal docket is heavy, including the U.S. antitrust case, the Epic Games dispute over App Store rules, and privacy and Siri litigation. Attorneys tracking those matters should note that reporting lines are shifting and confirm who now leads commercial and patent disputes. Apple and Meta compete in mixed reality, AI, and connected devices, and the two companies have increasingly traded senior executives, so this move fits a pattern. The reporting changes also show Newstead consolidating control over legal strategy in her first year. Watch for Apple's official confirmation and any further changes to Grenier's or Andeer's roles.
