Why it matters

Perplexity has launched Computer for Counsel, an AI product built specifically for legal teams. The platform integrates directly into lawyers' existing workflows—connecting to research databases, document repositories, contract management tools, and matter-management systems—to automate legal research, document collection, contract review, regulatory monitoring, citation checking, and intake processing. It operates within Microsoft 365, allowing users to draft in Word, pull files from SharePoint, and reference context from Outlook or Teams. The product is available now to Perplexity Enterprise and Max subscribers.

The launch includes partnerships with Midpage, a legal research platform offering case law and statutes with hyperlinked citations, and LegalZoom, which provides template libraries. Computer for Counsel builds on Perplexity's earlier February 2026 launch of Perplexity Computer, a cloud-based AI system that orchestrates multiple models—including Claude Opus 4.6, Gemini, and ChatGPT 5.2—to execute complex workflows autonomously.

For attorneys, this signals another major tech company targeting the legal market with AI designed to handle administrative work at scale. Perplexity's entry reflects a broader shift: AI systems are moving beyond chat interfaces to actively execute workflows and handle substantive legal tasks. The competitive pressure is real. As legal tech vendors race to reduce the administrative burden on lawyers, those who can wire into existing practice management systems and automate routine work will likely capture significant market share. Firms should evaluate whether integrating this type of tool makes sense for their specific workflows and cost structure.
